Job costing

See what each job cost in labor and materials, next to what you quoted.

What it does.

  1. 1

Hours and receipts land on the job.

Time your team logs against Job #318 and the bills for its materials are added as they come in.

  2. 2

The cost builds up next to the quote.

Labor and materials add up while the job runs, so you can see how much of the quote is left.

  3. 3

You hear when a job passes its quote.

An alert reaches you as soon as costs go over, while the job is still open.

  4. 4

Finished jobs are ranked by margin.

See which jobs made money and where the low ones went over, before you price the next one.

What changes for you.

  • You see which jobs make money.

Every finished job shows its price, what it cost and what was left.

  • Overruns show up while the job is open.

You hear as soon as a job passes its quote, while there's still time to act.

  • Costs land on the right job.

Hours and receipts are matched to the job they belong to, without anyone entering them twice.

  • Quotes are based on what jobs cost.

Past jobs show what each kind of work takes, so you can price the next one from real numbers.

How we build yours.

  1. Explain.

Tell us how you track hours, receipts and quotes today, by voice or text.

  2. Map.

We map where each cost is recorded today and how it reaches a job.

  3. Design.

We design the job cost view, the alerts and the reports around how you quote.

  4. Build.

Approve the design, and we build it, connected to your time tracking and accounting software where possible.

Questions.

Where do the hours and costs come from?

From what you already record. Hours come from your time tracking app or timesheets, and materials from the bills and receipts in your accounting software, such as QuickBooks Online or Xero. Each cost goes to the job, project or class it was entered under. Labor is costed at the hourly rates you set, or from payroll once it runs.

Doesn't QuickBooks already do this?

QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced, and Xero, include project tracking that shows profit per project when every cost is entered against it. We add hours from your time tracking app, receipts matched to the right job, an alert when a job passes its quote and one list of finished jobs by margin. If you already use projects there, we build on them where the software allows it.

Does it include overhead?

Yes, if you want it. We build in the way you or your accountant share overhead across jobs.

Do I need to change accounting software?

No. We connect to the software you use now where it allows it.

What does job costing cost?

The price depends on what we build. We quote the work before anything starts, and you decide whether to go ahead.
